TL;DR: A PRC license is the official credential the Professional Regulation Commission issues after you pass a board exam. It’s legally required for 43 regulated professions in the Philippines, from nursing to engineering to teaching. Getting it involves registration, documents, biometrics, and an oath-taking ceremony. Plan for a few weeks, not a few days. Furthermore, keeping it active requires CPD units and renewal every 3 years. Practicing without a valid license is illegal, and the consequences are real.

What is a PRC license?

Simply put, a PRC license is an official government credential that proves you passed the board examination for your profession. More importantly, it proves you’re legally authorized to practice in the Philippines.

The Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) issues it under Republic Act 8981, also called the PRC Modernization Act. PRC oversees 43 regulated professions, including nursing, engineering, teaching, accountancy, and architecture. If your profession is on that list, you need a PRC license before you can legally work.

That license number belongs to you alone. In practice, employers, schools, government agencies, and clients all use it to confirm you’re qualified for the role.

Who needs a PRC license?

Anyone practicing a regulated profession in the Philippines. Full stop.

Specifically, the list covers 43 professions, including nursing, civil and electrical engineering, professional teaching, accountancy, architecture, medicine, pharmacy, real estate brokerage, criminology, and nutrition and dietetics.

Schools, hospitals, government agencies, and most private companies are legally required to hire only licensed professionals for regulated roles. So working in any of these fields without a valid license isn’t a gray area; it’s illegal.

Which PRC-licensed professions are most in-demand?

Currently, three professions stand out consistently, both for local jobs and for those looking to work abroad.

Registered Nurses are still some of the most recruited Filipino professionals overseas. The ongoing global healthcare workforce shortage keeps demand steady in the UK, US, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE. That shortage isn’t going away anytime soon.

Civil and Electrical Engineers are in high demand locally because of ongoing infrastructure projects. Abroad, construction growth and renewable energy expansion across the Middle East and Southeast Asia keep Filipino engineers in steady demand.

Licensed IT Professionals are now required across virtually every industry. Companies worldwide need certified tech workers for cybersecurity, software development, and systems management. Filipino professionals are well-regarded in all three areas.

After 8 years as a licensed Professional Teacher, here’s something I want to say directly: a PRC license opens doors, but it doesn’t hand you a high salary. In fact, experience, skills, and the professional relationships you build still matter far more than the credential alone. The license gets you in the room. Getting the job is a separate challenge.

How do you get your PRC license for the first time?

After passing the board exam, there are still several steps before you hold your PRC ID. In fact, most new passers don’t realize just how many there are.

For instance, I went through this entire process after passing the Licensure Examination for Teachers. What surprised me most was the waiting time at each stage. It was not instant. Anyone expecting to walk out with an ID the same week they passed is in for a reality check.

The 9-step registration process

  1. Check the PRC website for the initial registration schedule for your profession
  2. Create your PRC LERIS online account and fill in your personal details
  3. Book your appointment as soon as registration opens; slots fill within hours
  4. Pay the registration fee online through your chosen payment channel
  5. Prepare all required documents: accomplished oath form, 2×2 ID photos (white background, with collar), and any profession-specific requirements
  6. Go to the PRC office on your appointment date with all originals and photocopies
  7. Submit your documents and have biometrics taken (photo and fingerprint)
  8. Attend the oath-taking ceremony for your profession
  9. Claim your PRC ID
1 Check PRC website for registration schedule 2 Create your PRC LERIS online account 3 Book your appointment (slots fill within hours) 4 Pay the registration fee online 5 Prepare all required documents 6 Visit the PRC office on your appointment date 7 Submit documents and have biometrics taken 8 Attend the oath-taking ceremony 9 Claim your PRC ID
The complete 9-step process to get your PRC license after passing the board exam.

The appointment system is the single biggest bottleneck. Specifically, slots open and disappear within hours. If you miss one, you’re waiting weeks for the next available schedule. So check the PRC website early and act the moment registration opens.

Since you’ll be starting a professional career soon, make sure your SSS membership is also in order. Understanding how your SSS contribution is computed early saves a lot of confusion when your first payslip arrives.

What documents do you need for registration?

Standard requirements for first-time PRC registration:

  • Original and photocopy of your board exam result slip or rating
  • Accomplished oath form, available through PRC LERIS
  • 2 pieces of recent 2×2 ID photos (white background, with collar)
  • Valid government-issued ID
  • Official receipt of registration fee payment
  • PSA-authenticated birth certificate (required for most professions)
  • Certified true copy of your Transcript of Records, certified by your school

Therefore, always check the official requirements for your specific profession on the PRC website before your appointment. Missing a single document can push your processing back by weeks. Re-booking the appointment means waiting all over again.

How does PRC license renewal work?

Your PRC license is valid for 3 years. When it’s time to renew, you’re not just paying a fee. You also need to complete Continuing Professional Development (CPD) units.

CPD units prove you’ve kept learning during the renewal cycle. Specifically, most regulated professions require 45 units per 3-year period under PRC CPD guidelines. You earn them by attending accredited seminars, workshops, or training programs and collecting the corresponding certificates.

This was honestly the most stressful part of renewal for me. Finding PRC-accredited CPD seminars that fit my schedule was genuinely difficult. Moreover, some providers fill up fast, and the fees add up over time. My strongest advice: start accumulating CPD units in Year 1, not Year 3.

3-Year PRC License Renewal Cycle Year 1 Start earning CPD units now Year 2 Attend more accredited seminars Year 3 Complete units, book renewal slot Goal: 45 CPD units per 3-year cycle (most professions)
Start earning CPD units in Year 1. Waiting until Year 3 is the most common renewal mistake.

How to complete the renewal process

Log in to your PRC LERIS account first and encode your completed CPD units. Have all your CPD certificates ready before you start. Next, set a renewal appointment; these slots fill just as fast as initial registration slots. After booking, pay the renewal fee online. Then visit the PRC office on your appointment date, submit all requirements, and wait for your renewed ID.

Additionally, set aside a full day for the office visit. Even with an appointment, the lines move slowly. Any mismatch between your personal records and the PRC system, such as a misspelled name or a wrong birth date, can stall your processing on the spot.

For managing government-related fees more conveniently, some professionals use the MySSS RCBC DiskarTech card as a digital banking option for government payments.

What happens if you practice without a valid PRC license?

It’s not just an administrative slap on the wrist. Real people face real consequences.

For example, one nursing colleague of mine didn’t renew her license on time. Her hospital suspended her from patient duties immediately. She couldn’t legally attend to patients until it was reinstated, and she lost weeks of income while scrambling to fix it.

Similarly, a teacher I knew was assigned classes with an expired license. When administration found out, she was pulled from the classroom temporarily. That meant no classes and no pay for that period.

Meanwhile, a civil engineer I know continued signing off on project documents after his license expired. PRC flagged it. He ended up paying fines and reprocessing approvals on several projects, which cost him time, money, and client trust.

Under Republic Act 8981, practicing without a valid PRC license can result in suspension or revocation of your license, criminal charges, fines, and termination from employment. In short, there is no grace period that makes this acceptable. Keep your license active.

How do you verify a PRC license online?

Go to the official PRC website and use the online license verification portal. Enter the professional’s name or their license number. The system returns their status, whether valid, expired, or suspended, within seconds. The verification is free.

In particular, this is useful for employers verifying job applicants, clients confirming credentials before signing contracts, schools checking teaching licenses, and anyone hiring a licensed professional for a project.

3 things people get wrong about PRC licenses

These misconceptions come up constantly among new board passers and their families. However, they’re worth correcting directly.

Passing the board exam means you’ve made it

It doesn’t. Passing is the start. Staying licensed means earning CPD units, renewing on time, and building real skills through actual work experience. I’ve been saying it for 8 years: a license is a floor, not a ceiling.

A PRC license guarantees a high salary

I started getting recruiter calls after earning my license, and that felt like validation. But I’ve also watched highly qualified colleagues struggle because they stopped developing professionally after the board exam. Therefore, the license gets you in the room. The rest is on you.

All OFW professionals earn well

Some do. Many don’t. In reality, demand and salary vary significantly by profession and destination country. A nurse heading to the UK is in a completely different situation from a teacher going to the Middle East. So do the actual research for your specific profession and target country before making any major move.

Now that you have your license, it’s also worth thinking about what to do with your income. Starting a Pag-IBIG MP2 savings account early is one of the simplest ways to grow savings with a tax-free dividend. And since licensed professionals with income also need to file taxes, the 2026 BIR 1701A guide walks through how to file your annual income tax return.
