TL;DR: A TESDA National Certificate is valid for 5 years. Renewal at the issuing TESDA office costs roughly ₱35 to ₱100 and needs your original NC, a photocopy, photos, and proof of at least 12 months of relevant work experience. You can renew early, even a year before it expires. OFWs abroad can renew entirely by email. Two gotchas can block a simple renewal: updated Training Regulations for your course, or missing proof of work experience.

If you are still deciding on a course or already comparing options for overseas work, start with two of our other guides first. One covers choosing a TESDA course for OFWs, and the main TESDA guide covers the rest. This one picks up after you already have your NC in hand.

I want to be upfront about where this comes from. I have not personally renewed a TESDA NC. I have not had many readers describe what happened when theirs expired while they were already deployed, either. Most of the feedback I get stops at “I have my NC” or “I’m preparing to leave.” What follows is built from TESDA’s own renewal rules, verified directly rather than pieced together from forum posts.

How long is a TESDA NC valid, and when should you renew?

A TESDA National Certificate or Certificate of Competency is valid for 5 years from the date it was issued. After that, you need to renew it or, in some cases, get reassessed entirely.

Do not wait for the expiration date to sneak up on you. I would tell readers to check the exact date on their certificate today. Set a reminder 6 to 12 months before it lapses, especially if you are already working abroad or planning to.

How much does TESDA NC renewal cost, and what documents do you need?

Renewal typically costs ₱35 to ₱100, depending on the office, plus the cost of passport photos. You will need your original NC, a photocopy, an application form, and proof of at least 12 months of relevant work experience.

RequirementDetails
Renewal feeRoughly ₱35 to ₱100, varies by TESDA office
Application formFilled out at the TESDA office
Original NC/COCPlus one photocopy
Photos2 to 3 passport-size, colored, white background
Certificate of EmploymentAt least 12 months of relevant work during your NC’s validity, signed by your employer (or a government official if self-employed)

That last requirement is the one people miss. TESDA is not just checking that your paper exists; it wants proof you actually used the skill. Bring documentation of your work history, not just the certificate itself.

Your 5-year NC timeline Year 0 NC issued Year 4 to 4.5 Best window to renew Year 5 Expires Renew here, 6 to 12 months early Renewing early avoids scrambling for documents while abroad. Only possible if no new Training Regulations apply to your qualification.
A TESDA NC is valid for 5 years; renewing 6 to 12 months before expiry gives you buffer time.

Can you renew before your NC expires?

Yes. If no new Training Regulations have been issued for your qualification, you can request renewal even while your NC is still valid. You do not have to wait until the 5-year mark hits. Many OFWs renew 6 to 12 months ahead of expiry specifically to avoid problems during a contract renewal or visa extension.

This is genuinely good news. It means you are not stuck waiting for a hard deadline. Renewing early also gives you a buffer if you later need a fresh CAV and DFA apostille for a new deployment.

The gotcha: renewal vs. a fresh competency assessment

Not every expiring NC qualifies for a simple renewal. If TESDA has issued new Training Regulations for your qualification since you were certified, simple renewal may not be an option. You may need a full competency assessment instead.

This catches people off guard because it has nothing to do with anything they did wrong. Popular courses like Caregiving, Cookery, and several construction trades have had their Training Regulations updated in recent years. That means an expired NC in one of those fields can suddenly mean redoing the written and practical exam. It is not just a small renewal fee anymore.

Before assuming renewal will be simple, check with the TESDA office that issued your NC. Ask whether your qualification still follows the same Training Regulations. Do not assume it does.

What if you can’t prove 12 months of relevant work experience?

If you cannot show at least 12 months of documented work in your certified trade, TESDA will most likely deny a simple renewal. Your realistic options at that point are a full new competency assessment, or a portfolio-based Recognition of Prior Learning assessment. The portfolio route is difficult to pass without real experience to show.

This surprises younger readers especially. A lot of people take a TESDA course right after finishing training, get the NC, and then do not actually work in that field for years. Maybe they took a different job, went abroad in an unrelated role, or simply had not found work yet. When their NC comes up for renewal, TESDA has no employment record to verify, and there is no automatic exemption for that gap. If this describes your situation, check with your issuing office early. Do not wait until the certificate has already expired to find out you need a full reassessment.

How do OFWs renew their NC from abroad?

Since 2024, OFWs can renew an expired or soon-to-expire NC entirely online by emailing scanned documents to TESDA’s Certification Office. You do not need to fly home to do this.

StepWhat to do
1Email your documents to co.cad@tesda.gov.ph
2Include an accomplished application form, Certificate of Employment, verified employment contract, and working permit or equivalent (visa, residence permit, and similar)
3Attach a high-resolution passport-size photo (JPG, collared shirt, white background) and a photo of three specimen signatures
4Attach a scanned copy of your Philippine passport, including entry and exit stamps, plus a government ID with photo and signature
5Receive your renewed e-certificate by email once approved, ready to download and print

For OFWs, the Certificate of Employment, verified contract, and working permit together serve as your proof of work experience. This works as long as your overseas job matches your certified trade. The same Training Regulations gotcha still applies here, so it is worth confirming your qualification’s status before you submit anything. If you still need to sort out other overseas documents, our guides on SSS coverage for OFWs and getting an SSS number online cover related paperwork.

OFW online renewal, no flight home needed 1. Email co.cad@ tesda.gov.ph 2. Attach Employment docs + permit 3. Attach Photo + signatures 4. Attach Passport + gov’t ID 5. Receive e-certificate by email Available since 2024 for OFWs with an expired or soon-to-expire NC/COC.
OFWs can complete the entire renewal process by email, without traveling back to the Philippines.

Does a renewed NC need a new CAV and apostille?

Most likely yes, though TESDA does not spell this out clearly in its public FAQs. Here’s the logic: a CAV authenticates the specific NC document you present, and a renewed certificate carries a new date. That makes it a new document, which generally means a fresh CAV if you plan to use it abroad again.

I want to flag this as an educated inference rather than a confirmed rule, since I could not find an explicit TESDA policy statement on this exact scenario. The safest move is to ask your issuing TESDA office directly when you renew. If you do need a new CAV afterward, our step-by-step CAV and apostille guide covers that full process, including the current fees and turnaround times.

A light warning on renewal “fixers”

Renewal is cheap and simple enough that you should never need to pay someone extra to “process” it faster. Be wary of Facebook pages or individuals offering to fast-track your TESDA renewal for a fee, especially if they ask for payment to a personal account.

The only legitimate channels are your issuing TESDA office in person, or the official co.cad@tesda.gov.ph email if you are an OFW abroad. Nobody with “connections inside TESDA” can skip the actual requirements, and anyone promising that is almost certainly a scam.

Frequently asked questions

How long is a TESDA NC valid before it needs renewal?
Five years from the date of issuance. After that, you need to renew it, or undergo a fresh competency assessment if new Training Regulations apply to your qualification.

How much does TESDA NC renewal cost?
Roughly ₱35 to ₱100, depending on the office, plus the cost of passport photos and any required documents.

Can I renew my TESDA NC before it expires?
Yes, as long as no new Training Regulations have been issued for your qualification. Many OFWs renew 6 to 12 months early to avoid problems during a contract renewal or visa extension.

Can OFWs renew their TESDA NC without flying home?
Yes. Since 2024, OFWs can email scanned documents to co.cad@tesda.gov.ph and receive a renewed e-certificate without traveling back to the Philippines.

What if I can’t prove 12 months of work experience in my trade?
Simple renewal will likely be denied. Your main options become a full new competency assessment or a difficult portfolio-based Recognition of Prior Learning application.

Check the expiration date on your NC today, whether you already have it or are about to receive one. Set a reminder 6 to 12 months before it lapses, and start the renewal process early rather than scrambling once it has already expired. If you are still working out which TESDA path fits your goals abroad, a few other guides can help. These cover enrolling in the TESDA Online Program, comparing courses for OFWs, and getting your PRC license context straight. Once you are earning abroad, our guide on saving through an MP2 account and applying for a postal ID round out the paperwork worth having in order.
