ECE or ECT? Pick the right board first

The Board of Electronics Engineering gives two separate licensure exams. One leads to the Electronics Engineer (ECE) license, and the other to the Electronics Technician (ECT) license. They have different entry requirements, so check yours before you file.

The rules come from Section 14 of the Electronics Engineering Law of 2004 (Republic Act No. 9292):

Electronics Engineer (ECE)Electronics Technician (ECT)
Who can take itHolders of a BS in Electronics and Communications Engineering or Electronics Engineering, or a related course the Board acceptsGraduates of an associate, technician, trade, or vocational course in electronics, or those who finished at least third year of a BS ECE or Electronics Engineering program
Exam coverageMathematics, applied sciences, engineering economics, laws and ethics, electronics, communications, computers, and ICTWritten and/or practical tests on subjects specific to technician work
Next levelProfessional Electronics Engineer, after at least seven years of experience(none listed in the law)

In short, the technician route is real and open to people who never finished an engineering degree. A vocational electronics graduate, or a student who stopped after third year of BS ECE, can still earn a PRC license. Meanwhile, an engineering graduate who wants to grow into a senior role should aim for ECE, because only that license leads to Professional Electronics Engineer.

The two exams also behave differently. In PRC’s last five regular releases, the ECT passed 65% to 82% of takers, while the ECE passed 42% to 62%. So the technician board has been the easier one to clear, although it opens a narrower set of roles.

Which electronics board can you take? (RA 9292, Section 14) BS ECE or Electronics Engineering graduate Vocational electronics grad, or 3rd year BS ECE done ECE board Electronics Engineer ECT board Electronics Technician Professional ECE after 7+ years of experience The Board can also accept a related engineering course for the ECE exam
Your schooling decides your board. Engineering graduates take the ECE exam; vocational electronics graduates and third-year BS ECE students take the ECT exam. Only the ECE license leads to Professional Electronics Engineer.

Passed? Where electronics work clusters in CALABARZON

The license is your eligibility, not a job offer. Still, if you live in CALABARZON, a lot of electronics work sits close to home. Laguna and Cavite host manufacturing ecozones under the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA), including Laguna Technopark and the Cavite Economic Zone. Electronics and semiconductor exporters operate in these zones.

Company names and openings change too often for us to list here. Instead, use these steps:

  • First, check PEZA’s current list of operating economic zones for the ones near you.
  • Next, look up the companies in those zones and go to their official career pages, not reposts on social media.
  • Then, read each posting for the license it asks for. Some roles want a registered ECE, while others accept an ECT.
  • Finally, keep your PRC license details ready, because employers usually ask for the license number and its validity.

Before your first payday, set up the basics every employer asks for. Get your SSS number, your Pag-IBIG MID number, and your PhilHealth registration. Once the salary starts, our Pag-IBIG MP2 calculator shows what a small monthly saving can grow into.

ECE vs ECT pass rates since 2024

Across PRC’s last five regular releases, the technician exam has passed a larger share of takers every time. The engineer exam stayed in the 42% to 46% range until March 2026, when it jumped to 61.62%.

In every regular batch since April 2024, a larger share of ECT takers passed than ECE takers. The ECE rate rose to 61.62% in March 2026 after four batches in the 42% to 46% range.

Next ECE and ECT exam: schedule

PRC has held the regular ECE and ECT exams twice a year, around March or April and again in October. In 2026, the ECE ran over two days and the ECT followed on the next day. Results have come out fast, within two to four working days of the last exam day. This section shows the next date only after PRC publishes it in its yearly schedule.

How is the exam scored?

This board scores differently from most. Under Section 16 of RA 9292, there is no general average. Instead, you need at least 70% in every subject, for both the ECE and the ECT.

The law does give one second chance. If you pass the majority of the subjects but score between 60% and 69% in the rest, you may take one removal exam on those subjects. However, if you fail the removal exam, you fail the entire licensure exam and must start over.

How the ECE and ECT rating rule works (RA 9292, Section 16) Passed 70% or higher in every subject Oath and registration One removal exam Most subjects passed, the rest 60% to 69% Fail it: whole exam failed Failed Any subject below 60%, or most subjects failed Sit a later exam
There is no general average on this board: each subject needs 70%. A candidate who passes most subjects and scores 60% to 69% in the rest gets one removal exam.

After your name appears

Online registration for the PRC ID and certificate of registration starts November 13, 2026. You register online through PRC’s website, prc.gov.ph, and sign the Roster of Registered Professionals in person. PRC announces the oath-taking date separately. Our guide on what a PRC license covers explains the card and certificate you will receive.

If your name is not on the list

Check your rating slip against the rule above. If you passed most subjects and the rest fall between 60% and 69%, you qualify for one removal exam. Otherwise, watch the schedule section for the next exam date, and file through PRC’s online system when the window opens.
