TL;DR: The TESDA aircon course is officially called RAC Servicing (DomRAC) NC II. It covers window-type, split-type, and domestic refrigeration units, not commercial or vehicle aircon. eTESDA gives you free theory, but the actual National Certificate needs a face-to-face assessment covering install, refrigerant recovery, and repair. Budget 3 to 6 months for the full path, though experienced techs can move faster. Compared to solar, aircon work pays less per job but repeats every few months instead of once per roof.

TESDA is the government’s skills agency. eTESDA, or the TESDA Online Program, is its free online classroom, and finishing it earns a Certificate of Completion, not the National Certificate. Account setup and enrollment mechanics live in our TESDA Online Program guide. If you are weighing this against rooftop work, our TESDA solar installation course guide covers that path in full. This page is the aircon side, and the money comparison between the two.

TESDA aircon vs. solar: which one actually pays better?

Neither, flatly. They pay differently. Aircon work repeats every few months on the same house. Solar work is one roof, then you move to the next site. That difference in cash-flow shape matters more than the sticker price of either course.

JobTypical customer priceWhat it is
Window-type basic cleaning₱300 – ₱800Filter and coil rinse
Split-type basic clean (indoor)₱500 – ₱1,500Most common weekday job
Split-type chemical wash / pull-out₱1,200 – ₱2,500Peak summer money
Freon / R-32 / R-410A recharge₱1,500 – ₱3,500Plus leak repair if needed
Window install₱1,500 – ₱3,000Labor only, unit separate
Split install (short pipe run)₱3,500 – ₱7,000Back-to-back, standard materials
Long-run / cassette install₱8,000 – ₱20,000+Fewer jobs, bigger ticket

A freelance tech who already owns tools keeps roughly half to two-thirds of the customer price on cleaning jobs. Less on installs, since copper and brackets eat into the margin.

PathAircon (RAC)Solar (PV installer)
Company salary, entry / NC II₱16,000 – ₱22,000/mo₱18,000 – ₱25,000/mo
Company salary, with experience₱20,000 – ₱25,000/mo; some ₱850 – ₱900/day₱25,000 – ₱35,000/mo on better crews
Freelance / own bookings₱1,500 – ₱6,000/day in summer if the phone ringsPaid per project or per kW, lumpy
Repeat workHigh. Same house every 3 to 6 monthsLow. One roof, then the next site
Dead monthsJune through October, slowerDepends on the project pipeline more than the weather

National salary databases put both jobs in a similar band, roughly ₱18,000 to ₱38,000 a month depending on experience, so the headline numbers look close. The real difference is cash flow, not the average.

Which one wins depends on what you actually want

Aircon wins on frequency. Three split-type chemical cleans in one Saturday, at ₱1,500 each, is ₱4,500 gross before gas. That is a realistic CALABARZON weekend. Solar does not hand you three roofs in one day unless you are on a large crew.

Solar wins on ticket size but loses on wait time. Company labor on a 5 kW rooftop job is often quoted around ₱40,000 to ₱65,000 to the contractor. Not to the installer on the roof, who still takes home a daily or monthly rate regardless. Project work only pays when a project exists. No project, no Saturday.

If the goal is a reliable second income in Cavite or Laguna, aircon is the steadier bet; cleaning alone can fund your tools in one hot season. If the goal is a growing industry with a higher ceiling, especially with an engineering background, solar demand keeps climbing alongside Meralco’s rising generation charge. Still, the first year is crew wages either way, no matter which path you pick. The real question is not which course is better. It is which cash-flow shape you want.

Aircon: repeat work Same house, every 3 to 6 months Multiple jobs per day Lower ticket, higher frequency Slower June to October Solar: project work One roof, then the next site Higher ticket per job Paid when a project exists, not on a schedule Demand tied to pipeline
Aircon income repeats often at a lower ticket size; solar pays more per job but depends on project flow.

What is the TESDA aircon course actually called?

RAC Servicing (DomRAC) NC II. Not “TESDA aircon course,” not “appliance repair,” and not the same thing as a car aircon qualification. TESDA splits HVAC work into separate certificates, and generic blog posts flatten all of them into one word: aircon.

What people assumeWhat it actually is
“TESDA aircon course” covers any aircon or fridge jobDomRAC NC II covers window-type, split-type, and domestic refrigerators only
It qualifies you for commercial or mall service workThat is Commercial Air-Conditioning Installation and Servicing NC III, a separate qualification
It covers car or bus airconThat is Transport RAC Servicing NC II, also separate
The course is mostly cleaningCleaning is the weekend income; the NC II assessment tests install, refrigerant recovery, leak testing, and repair

A reader who only wants chemical wash jobs does not need the full 480-hour path. A reader who skips refrigerant work will fail the NC II assessment even if they can wash a coil perfectly. TESDA’s own Training Regulation for RAC Servicing (DomRAC) NC II lists refrigerant recovery, recycling, and retrofitting as a required core competency, not an elective.

Does finishing eTESDA make you a certified aircon tech?

No. Finishing eTESDA RAC is a study certificate. DomRAC NC II is a shop test with live units and refrigerant. Cleaning aircons on Facebook is a hustle. Those three things are not the same, and the gap between them is where most people waste months.

One more layer sits on top of solar’s version of this myth, since refrigerant handling has its own rules that eTESDA theory alone will not prepare you for. R-22 is being phased out, so recovery and recycling are not optional background reading; they are the Code of Practice way of doing the job, and it is not how a self-taught neighbor tech usually learned it.

The certificate also does not open doors it was never meant to. A DomRAC NC II says you can work as a domestic RAC technician. It does not replace a PRC electrical license, a DTI business registration, or a supplier account for branded parts. The first year after passing is still crew work and cold calls, same as solar.

eTESDA’s aircon listings are a trap

Solar has one clean course listing on eTESDA. Aircon does not. HVAC content is scattered across separate course cards, and their titles rarely say DomRAC NC II outright.

A listing billed as “Refrigeration and Air-conditioning Servicing (DOMRAC) Online Course” may contain only one module, Packaged Air Conditioner Unit Servicing, covering install, piping, evacuation, and charging theory. That is one slice of the qualification, not the full domestic competency set. Separate cards exist for Transport RAC and for Commercial Air-Conditioning theory too, and finishing any of them still prints a Certificate of Completion, never the NC II itself.

Before you click enrol, read the module list, not just the word “aircon” in the title. If a listing asks for an enrollment key, it belongs to a trainer-run batch, not the open public course, so back out and find the public listing instead. Beyond that, the platform behaves exactly like it does for solar. Activation emails can take up to 24 hours and often land in spam. Desktop Chrome beats the mobile app for first setup, and cookies need to stay on for quizzes to save. Our solar course guide walks through those login snags in full detail.

How much does the DomRAC NC II cost, and how long does it take?

Expect to pay around ₱1,222 for the assessment fee, based on TESDA’s published schedule, though centers can vary slightly, so confirm the current rate before you book. That figure is different from solar’s ₱927; fees are set per qualification, and RAC uses more specialized tools than PV work.

ItemWhat it isRough cost
eTESDA / TOP modulesOnline theory, Certificate of Completion₱0
NC II assessment feePer TESDA’s current scheduleAround ₱1,222
Public TESDA center trainingFull 480-hour program, TWSP/STEP scholarship₱0 tuition if approved
Private TVI, self-payPaid training if no scholarship slot opens₱8,000 and up

Skip the 480-hour brochure math and think in real timelines instead. Two tracks apply here, and which one fits you changes everything.

TrackWho it fitsRealistic timeline
Track A: no shop experienceMost first-time readersAbout 4 months: theory, then a full 60-day batch with SIT built in, then assessment with the class
Track B: already cleaning or repairing informally“Titong aircon” techs, family businesses6 to 10 weeks, if the center allows direct assessment or RPL instead of the full batch

The 240-hour Supervised Industry Training is not extra time stacked on top of the 480 hours; TESDA’s own Training Regulation states it is included in that total. Ask your center directly: “Kasama ba ang SIT sa 60 days, o separate pa?” If they say separate, budget another month.

Enroll NC II Track A: no experience, about 4 months Enroll NC II Track B: experienced, 6 to 10 weeks Both include the same eTESDA theory; the wait is in the assessment slot
Experience shortens the wait far more than it shortens the course itself.

What tools do you actually need, and when?

Center-provided during training, personal after. TESDA’s Training Regulation lists vacuum pumps, recovery machines, manifold gauges, and flaring tools as equipment the center supplies for a class, not a shopping list for the student. Ask on day one anyway; some private shops stretch one pump across an entire batch.

LevelWhat’s in itRough cost
Cleaning-only starterPump sprayer, coil cleaner, fin comb, basic PPE₱2,000 – ₱6,000
Install and recharge starterVacuum pump, manifold gauges, hoses, flare and swage tools, leak detector₱15,000 – ₱25,000 budget combo; ₱25,000 – ₱40,000 for separate quality pieces
Full freelance shop kitAbove, plus a refrigerant recovery machine and brazing setup₱50,000 – ₱90,000+

Do not buy the full shop kit on assessment week. Train on the center’s tools first, then start freelancing with cleaning and basic repair using a few thousand pesos of chemicals and hand tools. Add the pump and gauges once booked jobs can pay for them, and buy a recovery machine only when volume justifies it, or share one with another tech.

R-22 phase-out and the warranty catch nobody mentions

R-22 is being phased out nationally, and this is not a distant policy footnote. In July 2026, DENR’s Environmental Management Bureau launched Stage 3 of the HCFC phase-out plan, targeting full phase-out by 2030. The government is actively funding RAC technician training specifically on refrigerant recovery and collection. CALABARZON houses are still full of old window-type units running on R-22, so DomRAC training still teaches recovery, leak repair, and retrofit rather than assuming everyone switches overnight.

The honest advice a certified tech gives is not always “keep charging it.” Sometimes it is “replace it,” since R-22 stock and pricing will keep getting worse as the phase-out continues. New installs run on R-32 or R-410A instead.

Brand warranty is the other catch. A DomRAC NC II is not factory authorization from Daikin, Carrier, or Koppel. In-warranty service is almost always locked to a brand’s own accredited technicians, so the NC II gets you cleaning jobs, out-of-warranty repair, and independent installs, not an official service center badge. That badge is a separate training path, usually run through a dealer, after the NC II is already in hand.

Where to start in CALABARZON

These public TESDA sites have listed RAC Servicing (DomRAC) NC II training. This is not an endorsement, and slots open and close fast, so call first.

  • TESDA Regional Training Center, CALABARZON, P. Herrera St., Batangas City.
  • TESDA Provincial Training Center, Paliparan, Dasmariñas, Cavite.
  • Jacobo Z. Gonzales Memorial School of Arts and Trades (JZGMSAT), Biñan, Laguna, a TESDA-administered school with a published DomRAC program.

Confirm each one is current and accredited through TESDA’s own registered-program list before you travel there, rather than trusting a school’s marketing page. Our guide on how to check if a school is TESDA-accredited walks through exactly how to do that. We are leaving private training centers unnamed here, the same policy as the solar article, since we have not personally vetted their tools or pass rates.

What to do this week

Call two accredited RAC Servicing (DomRAC) NC II assessment centers and ask the questions that match your track. Do not make “enroll in eTESDA” the goal; that step is already covered in our TESDA Online Program guide.

Track A, no real shop experience:

  1. Kailan ang next training batch, TWSP/STEP or paid?
  2. Kasama ba ang SIT sa 60 days, o separate?
  3. Kasama ba ang assessment fee sa scholarship, o bayad pa?

Track B, already cleaning, repairing, or installing:

  1. Puwede bang direct assessment o RPL, hindi na full 480 hours?
  2. Kailan ang next assessment date?
  3. Anong proof ang kailangan, tulad ng photos, job orders, o employer letter?

If a Track B applicant gets told they still need full training, they simply fall back to Track A. Nothing is lost; the call still replaced weeks of guessing. Once certified, our TESDA scholarship guide and NC renewal guide cover what comes next. If you eventually go freelance full-time, it is worth knowing how SSS coverage works for self-employed and voluntary members, so your contributions do not lapse.

Call an assessment center this week Track A: no experience Next batch? SIT included in 60 days? Fee covered by scholarship? Track B: already working Direct assessment or RPL? Next date? What proof is needed? Wrong track just falls back to Track A. The call is never wasted.
Two different scripts depending on whether you already work on aircons informally.

Frequently asked questions

What is the official TESDA aircon course called?

RAC Servicing (DomRAC) NC II. It covers window-type, split-type, and domestic refrigeration units, while commercial packaged units and vehicle aircon sit under separate TESDA qualifications entirely.

Is eTESDA aircon training enough to get hired?

No. eTESDA gives you a Certificate of Completion for theory only. Employers and clients look for the National Certificate II, which requires a face-to-face assessment covering install, refrigerant recovery, and repair.

Which pays more, TESDA solar or TESDA aircon?

Solar pays more per job but depends on the project pipeline. Aircon pays less per job but repeats every few months on the same house, so the two can land in a similar monthly range depending on the season.

Does the DomRAC NC II cover split-type aircons?

Yes. TESDA’s Training Regulation for RAC Servicing (DomRAC) NC II explicitly covers package and split-type units alongside window-type systems and domestic refrigerators.

Will R-22 units still be serviced after the phase-out?

Existing units can still be serviced through recovery, leak repair, and retrofit, but new installs use R-32 or R-410A instead. DENR’s HCFC phase-out plan targets a complete phase-out by 2030.
